What is the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check? • The Phonics Screening Check is meant to show how well your child can use the phonics skills they’ve learned up to the end of Year 1, and to identify pupilswho need extra phonics help. • The Department for Education defines the checks as “short, light-touch assessments” that take about four to nine minutes to complete.

  3. Is it a test NO! This is a screening check to provide information about how children are progressing in their phonic development, which is one part of learning to be a reader and a writer.

  4. Does My Child Have To Do It? Yes. This is a national check and all children in Year 1, in all schools, are screened .

  5. What’s on it? • The checks consist of 40 words and non-words that your child will be asked to read with a teacher (this is done one-to-one). Pseudo-words - your child may call them ‘alien’ words-are a collection of letters that will follow the phonics rules your child has been taught, but don’t mean anything – your child will need to use their phonic knowledge to read these and, therefore, show that they understand the phonics rules behind them. • Mrs. Adams and Mrs. Cotterill will be administering the checks and willgive the children a few practise words to read first – including some pseudo-words – so they understand more about what they have to do. Each of the pseudo-words is presented with a picture of an alien, as if the word were their name (and so your child doesn't think the word is a mistake because it doesn't make sense!).

  7. When will it happen? • All schoolswill administer the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check the week beginning 16th June 2014.

  8. What does my child’s result mean? Your child’s result will be based upon whether they fall below, within or abovethe National threshold. The ”threshold” this year is 32, which means children need to read at least 32 words out of 40 correctly. You will be informed of your child’s result once external validation has taken place (this usually takes a few weeks) . If your child’s score falls below the threshold, they will be given additionalphonics supportand willre-take the check in Year 2.

  9. How can I help? You can help your child by continuing to practise their magic words and by reviewing the sounds and spelling patterns they’ve learned in Reception and Year 1. Read books and stories with them (where they will be introduced to new words that they’ll have to sound out) and review the phonics sounds and rules as you go along.
