Position Paper • Now that you are sophisticated young adults, you are being introduced to subcategory of persuasive writing • The Position Paper
Different Types of Greens • Your green, or thesis statement, will sound different depending on your mode of writing • In other words, if your purpose is to explain, then your position on the topic will sound explanatory • Mary Dyer is an important historical figure. • If your purpose is to persuade, then your position on the topic will sound persuasive • Women deserve to be equally represented in middle-school history textbooks.
Last year…. • You focused on expository and persuasive writing • “Occasion/Position” statements • Ex: While I have many special stuffed animals, Pink Bunny is the most important to me. • Ex: While there are many soda’s on the market, Diet Pepsi is by far the best tasting. • This is all correct. Don’t stop using occasion/position thesis statement when they make sense
Listing Thesis vs. Implied Thesis • Listing Thesis – the 6th and 7th grade way • Thesis lists the topics of your body paragraphs • Ex: Although good teachers may have many qualities, the most important qualities are patience, understanding, and caring. • Ex: Although there are many good animals to have as housepets, loyalty, ease-of-care, and friendly disposition make dogs the best pet
Implied Thesis • Implied thesis – the 8th grade way • Ex: Although good teachers may have many qualities, the most important qualities are patience, understanding, and caring. You would only choose one quality and explain it • Ex: Although there are many good animals to have as housepets, loyalty, ease-of-care, and friendly disposition make dogs the best pet clearly are the best choice.

Green • AKA: Thesis Statement • DEFINITION: Topic/position on the topic • In research, never-ever-ever-ever use “I” statements • (I believe… I think…) • Unlike 7th/early 8th grade writing, this isn’t about you
Sample: • Read “Disaster at Sea” • After reading the selection, I decide to write a position paper based on this non-fiction selection • Topic: Commercial Fishing • Position on the topic: Dangerous occupation • Green: Commercial fishing is a dangerous occupation
Spot the Thesis Statement/Green • Which one is a thesis statement? • Ask yourself, “Does is state the topic? Take a position on the topic? Have an ‘I’ statement?” • This story is about the Alaska Ranger sinking. • I believe fishing in Alaska is really dangerous • Commercial fishing is a hazardous occupation • Although there are many dangerous occupations in the world, I believe this story explains a dangerous occupation.
Identify the Thesis Statement/Green • Read “Straight Talk on Prescription Drugs” • Identify the thesis statement/green • Ask yourself, “Does it state a topic? Does it take a position on the topic?” • Becoming a drug addict can kill you. • Prescription drugs can be really helpful but then again they can also be really harmful. • I think if you do drugs you are making a big mistake. • Prescriptions drug abuse can be just as dangerous as illegal drug abuse. • I think many people get addicted to prescription drugs but don’t really care or they just don’t know because they think they are safe since the drugs are prescribed by a doctor. • Prescription drugs are bad. • I think people should avoid prescription drugs.

Green/Thesis Review • YES: • The Burmese Python should be exterminated from the Everglades. • Importing plants and animals from other places should be more heavily regulated. • Burmese pythons in the Everglades should be removed. • NO because it is a cliché: • Fame doesn’t lead to happiness. • Money doesn’t lead to happiness. • NO: • Burmese Pythons have invaded the Everglades. • Burmese Pythons are an invasive species and endangered the Everglades.

Yellow(s) • Topic of body paragraphs • Basically, reasons
Reds • Examples, explanations, evidence, events, experiences that supports the yellows
Pinks • Comments – or adds additional information – about the red
Methods of Elaboration (can be reds or pinks) • ANECDOTES -- An anecdote is a short narrative inserted into an essay that develops an idea or argument. • EXAMPLES -- provide more specific information about an idea. • DEFINITIONS -- are restatements of an unfamiliar word or phrase to tell what it means. • STATISTICS and FACTS -- are the numbers (data) and information that help support your idea or argument. • QUOTATIONS -- are words someone says that can help support your idea or argument. • DESCRIPTIONS --are ways to create vivid images for the reader.
