Arable This means ploughing the land and growing crops.
Pastoral Rearing Animals for meat and wool. This includes sheep, cow & pig farming fool
Mixed You guessed it – a mixture of growing crops and rearing animals
Activities – Arable Farming Read the information on Arable Farming on p.28 then answer these questions: Give examples of crops that may be grown on an arable farm? What type of climate is needed for crops to grow? Why must arable farms be close to their markets?
Activities – PastoralSheep Farming Click on each sheep for a different short film on farming in Snowdonia 2:47 & 2.27 Read the information on sheep farming on p.28 then answer the following questions: Name the three products that would come from a sheep farm? Why are sheep so hardy? Are sheep picky about what they eat? Why is the land unsuitable to grow crops on?
Activities – Pastoral Cattle Farming Read the information on cattle farming on p.29 then answer the following questions: What products can cows be used to produce? What do cows need? Why must cattle farms be close to main roads? How is milk transported to the dairy?
Activity from the book… Complete Activity 2 on page 29 Remember: Human = something controlled or caused by human beings, e.g. the government Physical = something controlled or caused by something natural e.g weather Then copy summary at the bottom of the page.
Homework Create a menu record of food you eat in one day and say which type of farm each product comes from. (a) = arable (p) = pastoral Eg. bread = wheat = arable Beef = cow = pastoral You can present it using pictures ~ draw your own or get them from magazines, computer etc
Extension Activity Make a list of all the food you ate yesterday from your breakfast to your late night snack. Next to each type of food say whether it came from an arable or pastoral farm. e.g. Beef burger from Café Ole; Bread = wheat = arable Beef = cow = pastoral
