2. 1Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God, for your sins have brought you down.2 Bring your confessions, and return to the Lord. Say to him,“Forgive all our sins & graciously receive us, that we may offer you our praises.3 Assyria cannot save us, nor can our warhorses.Never again will we say to the idols we have made, ‘You are our gods.’No, in you alone do the orphans find mercy.” 4 The Lord says, “Then I will heal you of your faithlessness;    my love will know no bounds, for my anger will be gone forever.5 I will be to Israel like a refreshing dew from heaven.Israel will blossom like the lily;    it will send roots deep into the soil like the cedars in Lebanon.6 Its branches will spread out like beautiful olive trees,    as fragrant as the cedars of Lebanon.7 My people will again live under my shade.    They will flourish like grain and blossom like grapevines.    They will be as fragrant as the wines of Lebanon. 8 “O Israel, stay away from idols!    I am the one who answers your prayers and cares for you.I am like a tree that is always green; all your fruit comes from me.” 9 Let those who are wise understand these things.    Let those with discernment listen carefully.The paths of the Lord are true and right, and righteous people live by walking in them. But in those paths sinners stumble and fall.

3. “When Israel was a child, I loved him, and I called my son out of Egypt.2 But the more I called to him, the farther he moved from me, offering sacrifices to the images of Baal and burning incense to idols. Was there ever an Egypt time in your life that God called you out of? Have you had a time when you consciously moved away from God? When have you found it necessary to apply painful discipline?

4. 3 I myself taught Israel how to walk, leading him along by the hand. But he doesn’t know or even care that it was I who took care of him.4 I led Israel along with my ropes of kindness and love. I lifted the yoke from his neck, and I myself stooped to feed him. Has God shown a parent’s love to you? Are you conscious of God being active in your younger years of life? Have you ever spurned/rejected that love? Have you ever nurtured a new Christian, a new follower of Jesus?

5. 8 “Oh, how can I give you up, Israel? How can I let you go? How can I destroy you like Admah or demolish you like Zeboiim? My heart is torn within me, and my compassion overflows.9 No, I will not unleash my fierce anger.I will not completely destroy Israel, for I am God and not a mere mortal. I am the Holy One living among you, and I will not come to destroy. Have you ever felt this conflicted as a parent? How are God’s justice and mercy reconciled in this story?

6. 10 For someday the people will follow me. I, the Lord, will roar like a lion. And when I roar, my people will return trembling from the west.11 Like a flock of birds, they will come from Egypt.Trembling like doves, they will return from Assyria. And I will bring them home again,” says the Lord. What comfort do you take from God’s enduring love? How will be share this good news of home with others who have yet to come home?

7. “When Israel was a child, I loved him, and I called my son out of Egypt.2 But the more I called to him, the farther he moved from me,offering sacrifices to the images of Baal and burning incense to idols.3 I myself taught Israel how to walk, leading him along by the hand.But he doesn’t know or even care that it was I who took care of him.4 I led Israel along with my ropes of kindness and love.I lifted the yoke from his neck, and I myself stooped to feed him. 5 “But since my people refuse to return to me, they will return to Egypt    and will be forced to serve Assyria.6 War will swirl through their cities; their enemies will crash through their gates.They will destroy them, trapping them in their own evil plans.7 For my people are determined to desert me.They call me the Most High, but they don’t truly honour me. 8 “Oh, how can I give you up, Israel? How can I let you go?How can I destroy you like Admah or demolish you like Zeboiim?My heart is torn within me, and my compassion overflows.9 No, I will not unleash my fierce anger.    I will not completely destroy Israel, for I am God and not a mere mortal.    I am the Holy One living among you, and I will not come to destroy.10 For someday the people will follow me. I, the Lord, will roar like a lion.And when I roar, my people will return trembling from the west.11 Like a flock of birds, they will come from Egypt.    Trembling like doves, they will return from Assyria.And I will bring them home again,” says the Lord. 8. “When Israel was a child, I loved him & called him out of Egypt as my son.2 But the more I called to him, the more he turned away from me.My people sacrificed to Baal; they burned incense to idols.3 Yet I was the one who taught Israel to walk. I took my people in my arms but they did not acknowledge that I took care of them.4 I drew them to me with affection and love.  I picked them up and held them to my cheek; I bent down to them and fed them. 5 “They refuse to return to me, and so they must return to Egypt, and Assyria will rule them. 6 War will sweep through their cities and break down the city gates. It will destroy my people because they do what they themselves think best. 7 They insist on turning away from me. They will cry out because of the yoke that is on them, but no one will lift it from them. 8 “How can I give you up, Israel? How can I abandon you?Could I ever destroy you as I did Admah, or treat you as I did Zeboiim?My heart will not let me do it! My love for you is too strong.9 I will not punish you in my anger; I will not destroy Israel again.For I am God and not a mere human being. I, the Holy One, am with you.I will not come to you in anger. 10 “My people will follow me when I roar like a lion at their enemies. They will hurry to me from the west. 11 They will come from Egypt, as swiftly as birds, and from Assyria, like doves. I will bring them to their homes again. I, the Lord, have spoken.” (GNT)

9. ‘When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.2 But the more they were called, the more they went away from me.They sacrificed to the Baals and they burned incense to images.3 It was I who taught Ephraim to walk, taking them by the arms;but they did not realise it was I who healed them.4 I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love.To them I was like one who lifts a little child to the cheek,    and I bent down to feed them. 5 ‘Will they not return to Egypt and will not Assyria rule over them    because they refuse to repent?6 A sword will flash in their cities;    it will devour their false prophets and put an end to their plans.7 My people are determined to turn from me.    Even though they call me God Most High, I will by no means exalt them. 8 ‘How can I give you up, Ephraim? How can I hand you over, Israel?How can I treat you like Admah? How can I make you like Zeboyim?My heart is changed within me; all my compassion is aroused.9 I will not carry out my fierce anger, nor will I devastate Ephraim again.For I am God, and not a man – the Holy One among you.    I will not come against their cities.10 They will follow the Lord; he will roar like a lion.When he roars, his children will come trembling from the west.11 They will come from Egypt, trembling like sparrows, from Assyria, fluttering like doves. I will settle them in their homes,’ declares the Lord.
