Policy Statement We oppose the destruction of communities, farms, businesses and homes by the Fargo Dam and Reservoir, as proposed by the Red River Diversion Project.
“When Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker said at a recent flood briefing that the flood flowing through the city was ‘Not Fargo’s water,’ he was stating the obvious.” -April 13, 2011 Board Editorial-
Increased Flooded Area • Dam and pool would impact 23,000 acres more in 100 year flood • Total flooded area would be 54,000 acres • Current residents deal with minor flooding • Dam makes habitation impossible • Devil’s in the Depth
Significant Impacts of Fargo Dam • Destruction and removal of Hickson, Oxbow and Bakke • Relocation of farms, homes and structures where water would be deeper than 3 feet. • Flowage easements and ring dikes where water would be 1 to 3 feet deeper • Raises of interstate, highways and railroads
Alternatives • Minnesota Diversion always has, and always will be preferred choice of Army Corps of Engineers • Congressman Colin Peterson’s proposal for upstream retention could offset all upstream and downstream impacts of a diversion
