DELIGHTING OURSELVES IN THE LORD Text: Psalm 37:1-11 Do not fret because of evildoers, Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity. 2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, And wither as the green herb.
Trust in the Lord, and do good; • Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. • 4 Delight yourself also in the Lord, • And He shall give you the desires of your heart. • 5 Commit your way to the Lord, • Trust also in Him, • And He shall bring it to pass.
6 He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light, • And your justice as the noonday. • Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; • Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, • Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. • 8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; • Do not fret—it only causes harm.
For evildoers shall be cut off; • But those who wait on the Lord, • They shall inherit the earth. • 10 For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more; • Indeed, you will look carefully for his place, • But it shall be no more. • 11 But the meek shall inherit the earth, • And shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
INTRO: • What are those things that give you satisfaction? • Most of us heard this verse that if we delight in the Lord, He will grant the desires of or heart • Unfortunately, our heart’s desires are not granted and it means de do not really delight in Him. • Delight- to take great pleasure or joy
A high degree of gratification • Extreme satisfaction AIM: • FOR US TO TAKE GREAT PLEASURE OR JOY IN THE LORD • FOR US NOT TO FRET • Fret-to feel uneasy or express worry, annoyance, discontent
I. DO NOT FRET-V 1 • Do not fret because of evildoers • Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity. • For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, • And wither as the green herb-v 2 • Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, • Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass-v 7
Do not fret—it only causes harm -v 8 II. TRUST IN THE LORD-V 3 • Trust-firm reliance on the integrity, ability, faithfulness or character of God • Once we will be able to trust Him, then we will be able to do good • The reason why we fret is we are not having a firm reliance on God • Dwell in the land
Feed on His faithfulness III. DELIGHT YOURSELF ALSO IN THE LORD-V 4 • Almost all of God’s commands come with a promise or guarantee (benefits). • Sad to say almost all of us are not delighted in the Lord • We take pleasures from somewhere else, like good weather
Ex. Samaritan woman in John 4 • She asked for the water Jesus was talking about so she would not keep coming to fetch water from the well (No satisfaction) • The water from Jesus (the Holy Spirit) gives you streams of living water (full satisfaction) • When God commanded us to delight in Him, He is telling us where we can get extreme satisfaction
If you’re life remains unsatisfied that means you are not taking delight in the Lord • And He shall give you the desires of your heart- a promise with certainty as the morning comes after the night • Psalm 30:5 Weeping may endure for a night, But joy [comes] in the morning. • Would it includes any desires? • Yes, there was no limitations
But once your delight is in the Lord, your desires will be different • Colossians 3:1 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. • Colossians 3:2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
2 Peter1:3 as His divine power has given to us all things that [pertain] to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,
IV. COMMIT YOUR WAY TO THE LORD-V 5 • Commit- to put into charge or trust • Trust also in Him • And He shall bring it to pass. • He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light,-v 6 • And your justice as the noonday • It would be clear as noonday
V. REST IN THE LORD-V 7 • If we learn to take great pleasure in the Lord and if we learn to trust in Him, then we can rest in Him • Wait patiently for Him • For those who wait on the Lord shall inherit the earth. • For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more; • Indeed, you will look carefully for his place,
But it shall be no more. • But the meek shall inherit the earth VI. CEASE FROM ANGER-V 8 • Forsake wrath • For evildoers shall be cut off; VII. MAIN BENEFIT IF WE DELIGHT IN THE LORD-PEACE • And shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
John 14:27 "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. • Neither bothered nor troubled • Psalm 46:10 Be still, and know that I [am] God;
CHALLENGE: • Where are you delighted? • Do you now know why your heart’s desires are not granted? CONCLUSION: • Psalm 40:8 I delight to do Your will, O my God, And Your law [is] within my heart.
