  1. Brandon Murray Synergy Technical The Modern UX is SharePoint’s Future

  2. Agenda • What is the Modern UX? • Building Modern Sites • Upgrade & Migration • Wrapping Up • What’s next • Questions • Resources

  3. What is the Modern UX?

  4. What is the Modern UX? The Modern UX is the latest version of SharePoint… • New Team site template and a new Communication site template, with three default “site designs” • Team sites are connected to Office 365 Groups and all that comes with a Group, including a Microsoft Team • Communication sites are the new Publishing sites • SharePoint.aspx landing page

  5. What is the Modern UX? The Modern UX is the latest version of SharePoint… • Revamped lists and libraries • SharePoint Framework web parts/apps • Mobile app!

  6. What is the Modern UX? Modern is a reimagining of SharePoint • More of an app and less of a sandbox • Most sites should be site collections now, not subsites • The focus is on end users and developers • A focus on power users? Debatable…

  7. What is the Modern UX? A different philosophy drives the design of Modern SharePoint • Streamlined user options to be easier for end users • Do more without leaving the page (lists and list views) • Development of SharePoint by Microsoft has been iterative • Use standard web development tools to make building apps and web parts more natural for developers

  8. What is the Modern UX? Building the Modern user experience has been a long and iterative process… • Exists alongside the Classic user interface • Most settings pages are still classic

  9. What is the Modern UX? Developing and supporting Modern SharePoint sites and solutions is very different… • If npm, TypeScript, Yeoman, Gulp, React, Handlebars, Knockout, Angular (and many more) mean anything to you… You will love Modern! • But if you’re like me and you don’t break out in hives at the mention of XSLT, Xpath, display templates, Content Query/Content Search… Modern may be an adjustment 

  10. What is the Modern UX? Developing and supporting Modern SharePoint sites and solutions is very different… • PowerApps and Flow are hooked into the interface. • You can still use SharePoint Designer Workflow and InfoPath Forms (and I do on occasion!), but the experience is not ideal • Many administration tasks can only be done with PowerShell, and there are two different PS modules: • SPO • PnP

  11. Building Modern Sites

  12. Building Modern Sites The process of building a site includes: • Creating a new site • From the SharePoint landing page, the SharePoint admin portal, or PowerShell • Joining it to a hub with PowerShell • Optional, but recommended • Applying a look and feel • Building lists, libraries, and pages

  13. Building Modern Sites Advanced capabilities include: • Site provisioning processes with PnP PowerShell • Site Designs and Site Scripts

  14. Upgrade & Migration

  15. Upgrade & Migration Confession time… Remember when I said you should migrate to SharePoint Online so that you’d never have to upgrade again? …I lied 

  16. Upgrade & Migration Why upgrade at all? Classic is still supported, right? • Very little development being done in Classic • Classic has an expiration notice, if not a date… • Classic will eventually be deprecated, so if you’re building a new site, you should have a good reason • When people talk about SharePoint, they’re not talking about Classic anymore • It will get more and more expensive to develop Classic as the skills needed become rarer
