  1. Chapter 6 The American Revolution

Chapter Task • You will be doing a mock interview with a random partner • One person will conduct the interview, the other will be the interviewed character • Characters to interview: • Loyalist – Hannah Ingraham, David George • First Nation – Thayendanegea • German Mennonite – Hans Winger • Canadien (find one on your own) • Patriot (find one on your own)

  3. The interview will come at the end of the unit and I will give you more details on how it is to be done • I will also provide a rubric for grading

  4. End of the 7 Years War • Britain was deeply in debt due to the expense of war • Britain wanted to keep soldiers in the 13 colonies, but decided to make the 13 colonies pay for it through taxes

  5. This led to the famous cry • “No taxation without representation!” • What do you think this slogan means?

  6. The 13 colonies did not want to be taxed unless they had a representative in government • They wanted a say in how their tax money was spent • Why do you think this is important?

  7. 1775 Rebellion broke out • George Washington was named the leader of the 13 colonies army • War between the British and 13 colonies began • Look at the map on page 172

Declaration of Independence • Declartion of Independence • take notes on what you think is important from the declaration • “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

  12. What does the American Revolution Mean to Canada? • The 13 Colonies was divided in how they should react to British taxation and the cry for independence at the price of war

  13. 13 colonies is divided into Loyalists and Patriots • Patriot supports the colony • Loyalist supports Britain or no war • Loyalists were treated poorly and forced to move to Canada

  14. What should we add to our notes? • Read pages 175 - 178 and answer the respond questions on page 178 and 180 • Answer the respond questions in your notes and title the questions with the page number

Challenges created by the loyalist migration • by 1790 10% of Quebec’s population was made up of British Loyalists • How will this affect Quebec? • tensions rise • Loyalists want British Laws and Customs • Canadiens were concerned about how well the rights granted to them by the Quebec act would be protected

  16. Loyalists Press for Changes • Nova Scotia was already mainly settled by British after the deportation of Acadians • So when Loyalists migrated they assimilated well into this society • They eventually petitioned for recognition from Britain as a colony

In Quebec Loyalists were petitioning for British laws and customs in place of French • Britain owed Loyalists for supporting them in the American Revolution • Britain owed Canadiens for their support • Britain wanted both to remain their supporters in the face of further uprisings from America

  19. Impact on First Nations • What was Britain previously trying to do when negotiating with First Nations? • Peace and Friendship • After Loyalist migrations into Canada, they shifted to negotiating for … • land

British Government did negotiate for land in what was outlined as “Indian Territory” in the Royal Proclamation of 1763 • However this did not always happen: • Loyalists moving to Acadia found little good farm land, why? • They started to push into Mi’kmaq territory • The British Government allowed this • Reason Mi’kmaq were not in “Indian Territory”

  21. Britain's Decision • Establish the colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, St. John’s Island, and Cape Breton Island • Reorganize Quebec into Upper and Lower Canada • Upper Canada, east of Montreal = British custom and laws • Lower Canada, west of Montreal = French custom and laws

Britain also: • set aside lands for Protestant Churches • guaranteed Canadiens the right to Catholic religion • Established officials and legislative councils in each colony • Every person in Canada now had a “representative government” • That would be elected by only advised a British appointed governor

The War of 1812 • Started in Europe • France has had a revolution and dethroned their King and created a Republic • The Republic is lead by Napoleon (really he is a tyrant and there is no Republic) • The countries of Europe fearing revolutions in their country move to strike down Napoleon • Britain as part of the effort to defeat Napoleon stopped American ships from trading in France • The American’s retaliated by declaring war on Britain

  27. American’s going to fight a war at sea with Britain? • No, they are too young and poor of a country to have a large Navy • They go to war against Britain’s closet colony…Canada

  28. American View • teacher reads red type on page 191 • what am I telling you in that speech? • We are invading to liberate you from Britain • We will Kill the British, and place our or a government like ours in its place • Help us and we will win

Canadien View • Catholic church opposed a republican government established in France and America • Why? • Because the Kings enforced church law • Kings were the churches allies • Republics have no Kings • War is bad…Killing is a sin • Canadiens were given guarantees of French civil law, customs and Religion by the British • Would the Americans?

Position of Upper Canada • Many were loyalists during the deportation during the American Revolution • Some where American immigrants who supported the war • Those that supported the war were forced to leave Canada • Britain tried to stop American Immigration after this war • Britain began offering free plots of land in Canada to it’s citizens to encourage more British immigration

First Nation view • Read speech by Tecumesh (pg 194) • Their position was America was their greatest enemy • Britain was willing to fight them, so they should help defeat America • First Nation tribes helped us win this war by taking up arms (gifts from Britain) against America at the same time as America tried to invade Canada

  32. Laura Secord • can use her in your interview • She helped win the War for Canada • Canadien militia were pivotal in helping British soldiers defeat the Americans • The Americans did not have the resolve to invade Canada and win • Canada basically prevented them from taking over

The Interview • You and your partner need to pick a person to interview: • One partner is the interviewer and the other is the interviewee • Characters to interview: • Loyalist – Hannah Ingraham, David George • First Nation – Thayendanegea • German Mennonite – Hans Winger • Canadien (find one on your own) • Patriot (find one on your own)

  36. You need as much background information on that person as possible because you have to come up with 8 questions and answers • All questions need to be relevant to the time period being discussed in this chapter 1775-1812

  37. 8 Questions • 2 must deal with their opinion on should the 13 colonies rebel against the British • 2 must deal with how the American revolution affected your character • 2 must deal with their character’s position on how Britain is treating them after the American revolution • 2 must deal with you character’s opinion on the war of 1812 and whether or not Canada should rebel against Britain
