Nina was born on November 19, 1901 in Moscow, Russia. During the time in which Nina lived math was becoming a popular subject. As a student Nina was interested in math and very good at it. She attended L O Vyazemska's School for Girls. During her time in High School her math skills improved. She attended Moscow State University, after High School. She was the University’s first woman student to attend and graduate. Got a doctorate for her theory of the trigonometric series in 1926. Nina K. Bari ~Moscow State University~
The beginning of Nina’s research • Nina was in a group called "Luzitanians" and their goal was to study and figure out the mathematical field of function theory. • Later the group broke up, but Nina decided that the function theory was going to be the major subject in her research. • She began to teach at the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics. There she began research on the trigonometric series.
The trigonometric series function theory
The Function Theory A primitive of a function f(x), defined on an interval [a,b], is any continuous function F(x) for which F(x)=f(x) almost everywhere on [a,b].
Major Accomplshments • Nina was known as the principal leader of mathematics at Moscow State University. She helped many students earn their Ph.D. She also helped student’s to improve their theses. • She gave speeches at the International Congress of Mathematics. • Later, she was awarded the Rockefeller bonus which gave her the great chance to continue her studies in Paris until 1929. • Nina participated in many mathematical seminars. One of them was the Third-All Union Congress in Moscow in 1956 where Bari gave lectures about her work on trigonometric series. • In 1935, she was awarded the degree of Doctor of the Physical-Mathematical Sciences.
Accomplishments continued: • In 1952, Bari published an article about primitive functions and trigonometric series. • After 1926 she became a research assistant at the Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics in Moscow. • She wrote two textbooks called: -Higher Algebra (1932) -The Theory of Series (1936).
Interesting facts • Her parents were Olga and Karl Adolfovich Bari. • In 1932 she became a full professor at Moscow State University. • During 1927 - 1929 she spent time in Paris, attending lectures by Hadamard, who was a French mathematician.
Nina Bari’s death: • Nina Bari died in Moscow Russia. • In 1961 Nina died. It is believed that at the age of 60, Nina committed suicide after jumping in front of a subway train. • Some say that her suicide due to depression, caused by Luzin’s (a professor at Moscow State) death eleven years earlier. • Others say she fell in front of the train, and that it was just an accident. • No one knows for sure which story is true.
