    2. Fire Safety and Evacuation of Buildings Regulations 2006 Came into force on October 1st All buildings listed in Schedule 1 of the regs must comply with Part 1 (Fire Safety) Owners of ‘relevant buildings’ must comply with Part 2 (Evacuation Schemes)

    3. Part 1 – Fire Safety Maintain means of escape: Escape routes clear of obstacles Exit doors not blocked, barred or blocked Smoke and fire control doors not unlawfully kept open Stairs and passages not used for storage or accumulation of waste (including flammable cleaning materials)

    4. Part 1 – Fire Safety Evacuation Procedure: Travel routes to escape Fire alarm signal in building Firefighting equipment Evacuation notices

    5. Part 1 – Fire Safety General: Appliances (electrical, gas, flammable liquid) Control of open flames Packing and unpacking of goods Storage of materials (inside and outside the building) Firefighting equipment

    7. Part 2 – Evacuation Scheme In a nutshell, your evacuation scheme must specify: What to do if you discover a fire What to do if you are alerted to a fire Where the place or places of safety are, and how to get to them

Part 2 – Evacuation Scheme Other issues: First aid firefighting equipment 6 monthly trial evacuations (notify NZFS of intention 10 days before, and of results 10 days after) Training programme may be used instead of trial evacuation (other than for educational institutes, including early childhood facilities) Provision for persons with a disability Sprinklers – exempt certain relevant buildings, and allow places of safety within the building

Before an emergency: Good fire safety housekeeping Good exit signage Clear evacuation procedure notices Well maintained and clearly identified fire alarm system Well maintained and clearly identified firefighting equipment Well trained and prepared wardens

    10. So what does the Fire Service want? During an emergency: Evacuation procedures followed Clearly identifiable wardens Head warden clearly distinguishable Head warden available to meet NZFS at attendance point Head warden has information on evacuation status Information on persons with disabilities readily available

    11. Basic emergency procedures R aise the alarm A ssist persons in immediate danger C ontain the fire E vacuate to a place of safety

    12. Submitting an evacuation scheme Evacuation schemes must be approved by the Fire Service Application must be made using the prescribed form Information can be found at www.fire.org.nz under ‘Evacuation Advice’
