EU approval of Steviol Glycoside: focus on Safety • Streamlining of the 3 European applications • Safety = Purity: 95% steviol glycoside • As recommended by JECFA in June 2008 and as asked for by the European Commission to EFSA • Flavour = Reb. A vs other steviol glycosides, choice left to the consumers/food & beverage manufacturers
Steviol Glycoside • Authorized for use in cosmetics • Approved in Switzerland on a product by product basis • EFSA mandated by EC for approval of 95% steviol glycoside as a Food Additive • Authorization expected by Q2 -11
Stevia Leaves • Novel Food application for dried Stevia leaves filed by EUSTAS in August -07 • Approved as a sweetener in Macedonia and Slovenia before EU membership • Switzerland • “The German Contradiction”
