  1. Unit 2, Notes #14= Using microbes to clean oil http://www.darkenergybiosphere.org/resources/toolbox.html

  2. PROBLEMS IN OUR WORLD  What is this??

  3. Seabirds covered in oil because of the oil spill… WHO IS AFFECTED? (PLUS CLIP) Beach areas closed because of unsafe water… HOW DO WE FIX THIS? Fisherman are affected because fish are no longer able to be sold!

  4. WAYS TO FIX THIS PROBLEM In your notes: MAKE A LIST OF AS MANY WAYS AS YOU CAN THINK OF TO CLEAN UP THE OIL SPILL (1 minute)

  5. MICROBES!!!! Alcanivorax Borkumensis

  6. How Do They Help?

  7. MICROBES EAT HYDROCARBONS IN OIL • What are hydrocarbons? • What type of bond is in a hydrocarbon? • What are the electrons doing in this bond?

  8. How many valence electrons does carbon have? How many more electrons does carbon need to make a full shell? Carbon can make four bonds and this allows it to make long chains of hydrocarbons. C C

  9. THE MOST COMMON HYDROCARBON:N-ALKANES N-Alkanes are single bonded hydrocarbons. n-alkanes Example of an N-Alkane (Methane) & (Decane) Single Straight C

  10. Different Types Of N-ALKANES • The 10 simple hydrocarbons. • 1 C = meth- • 2 C = eth- • 3 C = prop- • 4 C = but- • 5 C = pent- • 6 C = hex- • 7 C = hept- • 8 C = oct- • 9 C = non- • 10 C = dec- Lewis Dot Structure Methane: Hexane:

  11. EXAMPLES: • Propane: Formula: • Butane: Formula: CnH2n+2

  12. TRY BY YOURSELF: PENTANE • Lewis Dot Structure: • Formula:

  13. WHITEBOARD: PRACTICE PROBLEMS • Your microbe consume on n-octane for its nutrients and energy to survive. Draw a Lewis Dot structure for n-octane and find the molecular formula. • Your microbe consume on n-Butane for its nutrients and energy to survive. Draw a Lewis Dot structure for n-butane and find the molecular formula. • Your microbe consume on n-nonane for its nutrients and energy to survive. Draw a Lewis Dot structure for n-nonane and find the molecular formula.

  14. Assignment • Work on the hydrocarbon practice worksheet. • Also work on the word search that contains important key terms that were presented in this presentation.
