  1. Answers to questions listed on chp 13 review

  2. Section 13.5

  3. What is desalination? • Any process that produces freshwater from saltwater

  4. Describe the 2 main methods used to desalinate water • Distillation: Heat saltwater up, evaporate water, leaving salt. Move water vapor to new location, cool it down to condense back into drops of pure water • Reverse Osmosis: Use pressure to move water through a screen. Screen keeps out salt, but allows water to pass through

  5. Which process costs more? Why? • Distillation, because it requires more energy to run the process

  6. What are the main benefits to create water with desalination? • Create usable water where there is none • Net addition of usable water

  7. What are the main negatives to desalination? • Expensive • Chemicals used to process the water may contaminate the source • Where to put the salt brine created by the process

  8. Section 6

  9. 65-70% of world water is wasted due to • Leaks • Evaporation

  10. What is the main cause of water waste • Water is too cheap • More expensive to pay for repairs

  11. Suggestions to implement Price increase • Pay as you use • A certain amount is free (cheap), any use above that is much more expensive to obtain • Reward conservation/ punish waste

  12. What does government subsidize? • The government currently subsidizes the cost of water (makes it cheap) • The government should subsidize building more efficient systems

  13. Which methods of irrigation greatly reduce water used? • Center pivot • Drip irrigation

  14. What is irrigated with treated wastewater • Effluent spray irrigation • Public golf courses, parks or designated fields around some housing developments

  15. 5 practices done at home that conserve water • Shorter showers • Water efficient toilets • Fix dripping faucets/ leaky pipes • Turn water off while brushing teeth • Rain Barrels

  16. What can cities /government do? • Make water expensive • Fix leaks in water systems • Limit use of water • Limit population growth

  17. What can industry do to conserve water • Recycle/ Reuse more • Use water more efficiently

  18. Last question • All have advantages and disadvantages • Conservation of water holds the greatest potential
