Lysanias Lysanias was the ruler of a small realm on the western slopes of Mount Hermon, attested to by the Jewish writer Josephus and in coins from circa 40 BC. There is also mention of a Lysanias dated to 29 AD in the gospel of Luke. It has been debated whether these are the same person.
Annas and Caiaphas Annas became high priest, but was removed from office by the Roman procurator "for imposing and executing capital sentences which had been forbidden by the imperial government". After a few interim high priests, Caiaphas became high priest. Since Annas hadn't died... he was technically still high priest, according to the Law. But, Caiaphas had become high priest as well.
John the Baptist John the Baptist was an itinerant preacher and a major religious figure mentioned in the Canonical gospels and the Qur'an. He is described in the Gospel of Luke as a relative of Jesus who led a movement of baptism at the Jordan River.
