Chapter 3 Love in Relationships Key Terms
Romantic love • Characterized by such beliefs as love at first sight, there is only one true love, and love conquers all • Infatuation • Passion without intimacy or commitment
Conjugal love • Less emotional, passionate, and exciting than romantic love. Characterized by companionship, calmness, comfort, and security. • Ludic love style • Views love as a game, refuses to become dependent on any one person, and does not encourage another’s intimacy.
Pragma love style • The love of the pragmatic, who is logical and rational. • Eros love style • A love style of passion and romance.
Mania love style • Love style with feelings of intense emotion and sexual passion but is out of control. • Storge love style • Calm, soothing, nonsexual love devoid of intense passion.
Agape love style • Selfless and giving, expecting nothing in return. • Stalking • Repeated, willful, and malicious following or harassment by one person of another.
Extradyadic relationship • Emotional/sexual involvement between a member of a pair and someone other than the partner. • Jealousy • An emotional response to a perceived or real threat to an important or valued relationship.
Polyamory • Persons in polyamorous relationships agree that they will have emotional/sexual relationships with others and seek to rid themselves of jealous feelings and to increase their level of compersion. • Compersion • The situation in which an individual feels positive about a partner’s emotional and sexual enjoyment with another person, the “opposite” of jealousy.
