  3. Lets take a look at Crosby’s text Read as a class and discuss Individually answer CRS questions Apply SOAPStone to the reading

  4. How the AP Test Breaks down…know the test!!!! • 80 multiple choice questions – 55 minutes • 3 essays – 2 hours • Document Based Question (DBQ) – 45 min + 10 min. reading time • 2 Free Response Essays – 70 min. • Total: 3 hours and 5 minutes. The test is on Wednesday May 14th 2014.

  5. Pause…It’s time to think Critically. • What did you notice about the requirements of the AP Exam? • What skill do you believe is most important, based on the information we just went over?

  6. Get the grade • The AP Test is scored from a 1 to a 5 • 1- AP says “no recommendation” • 2- AP says “possibly qualified” • 3- AP says “qualified” (colleges let you skin an intro course and start at a higher level) • 4- AP says “well qualified” (colleges give you credit for a course. Cost on average $3,000) • 5- AP says “ extremely well qualified” (elite colleges will give you credit for courses.)

  7. How does the score add up?? 50%Multiple Choice • 70 questions 50%Essay • Each essay is graded out of 9. • For a total of 27 possible points YOU DO NOT LOSE POINTS FOR GUESSING.

  8. Pride in the Challenge • You have been selected because you have proven that you have the capacity to work hard. • You need to prove it. • The successful AP student takes pride in the challenge of the work presented.

  9. Focus on the Effort, not the Outcome • You will struggle. • This is challenging. • You will see some of your classmates get things more quickly. • The successful AP student is not jealous about grades, they are jealous about the effort. • It’s not: I want to have the grade that Mike has. • It is: I want to put in the effort and the time and the work that Mike does. • The results will come.

  10. Improvise. Adapt. Overcome. • Improvise - to make or create (something) by using whatever is available • Adapt - to change (something) so that it functions better or is better suited for a purpose • Overcome – to rise above.

  11. Some notes about your notesScan, Skim and read • Scan first: look over the reading, notice images and organization of text – NO Reading • Skim next: read the Title, Subheadings, and text boxes • Read last: read the chapter, now your brain knows how to organize the information • Don’t build the house without the framework

  12. As you read • Interact with the text – if you’re not writing, you’re not thinking!

  13. Don’t forget… • Chapter 1 terms and notes due tomorrow!!!
