Why did DLG lead a coalition government? (text pg 49-50) • During the war the coalition had been seen as patriotic and effective • A government combining cross party talent would help restore normality • To stay in power, DLG had no choice – the Liberals were split and Labour refused to join a coalition
Why was DLG in a weak position? (text pg 49-50) • His power rested on his former political enemies rather than his own party supporters • Wartime spirit of co-operation would not last forever • He needed to be successful • He had no strong political base of his own • The radical promises he made e.g. “homes fit for heroes”, would be hard to deliver
