What is ITS ? • Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) means electronics, communications, or information processing used singly or in combination: • to enhance surface transportation efficiency, reliability and facilitation of intermodalism; • to enhance safe operation of motor vehicles and nonmotorized vehicles; and • to protect and enhance the natural environment and other resources affected by surface transportation.

ITS Under SAFETEA • ITS can be found in several titles of the law, including Federal Aid Highways, Highway Safety, Public Transportation, Research, and Transportation Planning. • Funds available for each class of Federal lands highway are available for ITS projects eligible for assistance under Title 23.
ITS Under SAFETEA • The National ITS Architecture and Standards Program is continued in SAFETEA. • The National ITS Architecture is a general framework for planning, defining, and integrating ITS. • “Conformance with the National ITS Architecture”
Leveraging Regional ITS • A regional ITS architecture is a specific regional or transportation service area framework • States, MPOs, and local agencies would be required to develop and maintain a regional ITS architecture • Different Types of “Regions” including rural corridors, tourist areas, National Parks, and potentially National Forest. • Provision should be made to include participation from the Forest Service • Which “Region” can you be a part of ?
