  5. What is Surrealism? And who are the Surrealists?   6. Surrealists became interested in creating paintings that were generally based on their dreams. Some dreams were strange and un-real but the Surrealists liked the idea of creating paintings of places people have never seen or experienced.   7. Their paintings were filled with familiar objects which were painted to look strange or mysterious. Surrealists would often think about the size of familiar objects and change them. This would help them create paintings of places out of this world. They thought that their paintings might stir up feelings in the back of peoples minds Surrealists hoped their odd paintings would make people look at things in a different way and change the way they felt about the world they lived in.   14. What have we learnt so far? Surrealism • started from a group of artists and writers who wanted to create art in a new and different way • artworks are generally based on dreams, imagination and fantasy. Sometimes they use familiar objects and make them appear strange or mysterious • offered people a chance to look at things in a different way and change how we felt about the world we live in • has influenced many artists to think about how they make art. From painters to photographers and sculptors.
