The Epic Hero. Theseus. Birth. Son of King Ageus (King of Athens) and Aethra His father had to return to Athens, and as soon as Theseus was able to lift the stone and retrieve the sandals and sword, he would go to Athens and become the next heir to the throne. Goal or Quest.

Birth • Son of King Ageus (King of Athens) and Aethra • His father had to return to Athens, and as soon as Theseus was able to lift the stone and retrieve the sandals and sword, he would go to Athens and become the next heir to the throne.
Goal or Quest • To become the rightful heir of Athens • To Crete to slay the Minotaur (half man half bull).
Journey • He most go to Athens – a dangerous journey: - giant Periphets (big club) - Sinis (The Pine-bender) - Sciron (the robber) - Cercyon (The Wrestler) - Procrustes (The Stretcher)
Journey • To Crete (to slay the Minotaur).
Friends or Guides • Araidne – who helps Theseus find a way out of the Labyrinth; (She offers him the ball of twine to use as a way of escape and a sharp sword to kill the Minotaur)
Danger The Monsters and . . . • Medea (Theseus’ step mother who tries to poison him.) • The Minotaur (a horrible monster – Athens had to make a yearly tribute of 7 boys and 7 girls it King Minos of Crete) he was kept in the Labyrinth built by Daedalus.
Darkness The death of Icarus – flew to close to the sun (his wax wings melt) and drowned in the sea. Theseus betrayal of Aridne. He leaves her on the island.
Success • Kills the Minotaur • Saves Athens – from the Minotaur yearly sacrifice. • He marries Hippolyte and has a son Hippolytus.
Qualities • Brave/Clever but. . . * He dishonors Ariadne, and becomes a tyrant who is assassinated and later honored by Athenians.
