The Major Shifts – not as major as you might think. Many of these things we do already. • Shift to higher-level thinking skills – students will be asked to think critically and analyze more as we read literature and informational texts. Why? and How? more than What? And When? • Increasing focus on informational text – we will read a nice blend of fiction and non-fiction, taking a deeper look at both. • Not coverage, but depth and focus: RIGOR. Instead of quantity we are concerned with quality. Not how many stories or texts can we read, but how deeply can we look into the texts. • Writing EVERYDAY! Writing about texts, citing sources, always proving our ideas with evidence from the text.
Academic Vocabulary you will be hearing daily … • Citing evidence from the text • Close reading • Objective summarizing • Comparison and Contrast • Supporting Arguments • Rubrics and Scales • Critical Analysis
A Balance of Literary and Informational Text • Informational text will now have same weight as narrative text • All teachers teaching reading strategies • Students write frequently about what they are reading and learning • Activities which strengthen students speaking and listening skills You will see You will not see Only literature used during the reading block No connection between the reading and writing assignment One text for all reading assignments Reading strategy instruction only in Language Arts
Content Area Literacy • ALL students engaged in grade level high quality text • Students thinking critically about the text • Students engaged in close reading • Students reading from many different texts You will see You will not see Students always given different levels of text based on reading ability Students given a summary of the text prior to reading it No support for students reading below grade level
THE HIGHEST PRIORITY FOR COMMON CORE “…read closely and gain knowledge from texts.”
Close Reading • Students will have to analyze the text and provide evidence to back up their claims • Questions that require students to make inferences from the text • Students explore how words and details add meaning to a text You will see You will not see Low level questions which can be answered by listening to the teacher Questions centered on a student’s background or experience Students do not have to make connections to the text to answer questions
Goal of Close, Analytic Reading …be able to discern and cite evidence from text to support assertions. Analytic Reading + Analytic Writing = Analytic THINKING
STUDENTS WILL READ LIKE A DETECTIVE! • Use clues / evidence from text • Make non-trivial inferences based on that evidence • Use information from multiple sources within or between text to make arguments
Focus on Writing Arguments from sources • Students required to use more than one source for their writing • The majority of writing will use evidence to inform or make an argument • Evidence from text required in writing assignments and oral discussions You will see You will not see Writing only in Language Arts Writing assignments that are not tied to reading Writing that is not routine and continuous in every discipline
Vocabulary • Instruction on using context clues • Focus on words which are prevalent across the content areas as well as those that are content specific • Students expected to apply academic vocabulary in writing and in discussions You will see You will not see Vocabulary that is limited to students copying words from the dictionary Vocabulary tests which requires students to simply match a word to the definition Vocabulary which is not connected to the content studies
To FOCUS ON THE STANDARDS… WE WILL DESIGN STANDARDS BASED ASSESSMENTS AT LPA Develop/refine and implement teacher/District Formative Assessments and End of Course Exams to inform instruction and measure student learning This means…your child’s assessments will look different than they did in the past
Your child WILL • Be able to identify his learning goal in each classroom • Identify standards which he/she has mastered or those on which he/she has to work • Be able to explain what strategies he/she is using to read closely • Write every day in every classroom • Read more informational text • Do more research • Wrestle with thinking critically
How to be in the know about Language Arts class… • Check Edmodo – I try to update all classes daily. There are also copies of most necessary documents, worksheets, notes, and instructions. Also links to very helpful websites.
