Training at VO2max in Sub Elite Rowers Matthew Driller, James Fell, Andrew Williams, Cecilia Shing, John Gregory, Jessica Webb, Diana Dickenson and Renee Sushames.
Significance of the Problem • ‘Velocity at VO2max’ termed (1984), • VO2max & economy combined (Billat & Koralszstein, 1996), • Training at vVO2max shows positive effects ( • Runners (Smith et al 1999, Billat et al.), • Swimmers ( • Cyclists ( • Training at v VO2max is reported (Daniels, 1998 & Noakes 2001).
Rationale and Aims • To determine if training at vVO2max (HIT) in Rowers can improve performance, • To establish if training at vVO2max could be more effective than intensive endurance training (PT).
Randomisation Research Design HIT Training PT Training 2000m TT 7 x 4min Test & DEXA 4 weeks 2000m TT 7 x 4min Test & DEXA 4 weeks 7 x 4min Test & DEXA 2000m TT PT Training HIT Training vVO2max 2.0 & 3.0 mM Po
Results • * Significantly Different p = ≤ 0.05
Results • * Significantly Different p = ≤ 0.05
Conclusion • 6 athletes withdrew from the study, • Structured training improves fitness & performance, • 7 out of 10 Rowers responded positively to HIT, • 2000m TT & relative VO2max improved & • 4-min all-out Power increased.
