Enhanced EVAP Phase-in 2 1996 ----- 20% 1997 ----- 40% 1998 ----- 90% 1999 ---- 100% Gas Caps? Manufacturers with sales less than 10,000 vehicles per year are exempt until 1999 when 100% compliance is required.
The typical non-enhanced EVAP system contains the following components: • EVAP emission pressure control valve. • Vented canister. • Diagnostic switch • EVAP purge solenoid. 3 Do you see the words “Gas Cap” here?
The Enhanced EVAP System uses the following components: Evaporative system canister. Fuel tank pressure sensor. Canister purge solenoid. Canister vent solenoid. Service port. Fuel cap. Fuel level sensor. 4 Do you know anybody that has changed a gas cap?
5 Who Is Using Smoke Technology EVAP Machines? Using an EVAP-approved smoke machine isn’t just recommended, it’s now required by DaimlerChrysler, Ford, General Motors, Land Rover, Saab and Saturn. More approvals are pending.

8 Unlike traditional general-purpose smoke machines, the EVAP-approved units use an inert gas like Nitrogen for testing the EVAP systems. Where can you get a Nitrogen tank ? 10 Caution Must remove core and DON’T LOOSE IT ! Clockwise to remove Put smoke supply hose in good and tight Now we are ready to find leak(s)
Intake Manifold 11 Disconnect the hose between the Purge Valve and Charcoal Canister, at or as close as you can to the Purge Valve. Insert the EVAP tester supply line into the hose that is going to the Charcoal Canister. Close “Canister Vent Valve” and continue testing the system. Purge Valve No EVAP test port? This test is done with key on engine off Charcoal Canister Canister Vent Valve Fuel Tank Canister Vent Valve When smoke is put into the EVAP system (Canister Close Valve is closed) there should NOT be any smoke exiting the Canister Close Valve. This test procedure doesn’t test from the Purge Valve back to the engine.
Caution 12 The EVAP system is NOT to be tested with more than 13” of Water Column (less than 1/2psi). The OE-approved machines have a built-in regulator to handle this task. General purpose smoke machines can produce 3 to 5 times more pressure than recommended by the manufacturers. Over pressuring the system can and will cause damage! Look at the tag on the service port 1psi Max

Put the unit in the test mode and push the remote button. With the canister vent valve closed, wait for the ball to stop descending. If the ball stops above the red flag, the leak(s) are greater than calibrated.
