Authors Intentions • Foster the People’s purpose is to raise awareness to current issues concerning bullying and neglect. • Foster explains, “It's about the psychology of a kid; it's really about bullying…I wanted to paint a picture of his home life and really bring out the humanity in this kid and show that it's tragic to be on either side of bullying.” (Kornelius, 2011) • Presents neglect in Roberts’ home with the lyrics, “Daddy works a long day/ He be coming home late, yeah, He’s coming home late…dinner’s in the kitchen and it’s packed in ice/ I’ve waited for a long time” (Foster, 2011).

Juxtaposition • Definition: an act or instance of placing close together or side by side especially for comparison or contrast (Grant-Davie, 2011). • The contrast comes from the style of music (indie-pop) type genre, and the violent nature of the lyrics in the depiction of the character fantasizing about running after the “kids with the pumped up kicks” (Foster, 2011) with a gun he stole from his father. • Typically the issue is relatable to the music accompanied by it, and that’s why there is a contrast. Mark foster describes the style, “it does have a sunshine, fun kind of vibe. I think people don't understand. It's like a wolf in sheep's clothing” (Kornelius, 2011).
