versatile • Adjective: changing easily or having many good uses • The football player is so versatile that he can play several positions really well.
tentative • Adjective: not final; still not sure • My schedule for 7th grade is still tentative because I’m not sure if I’ll take band or choir. I’ll decide later.
substitute • Verb: to replace with something else • We’re going to substitute milk chocolate for dark chocolate in the recipe because it tastes better.
Restore • Verb: to put it back in its original condition • We’re going to restore the old table by sanding it down and re-staining it.
persevere • Verb: to keep going and don’t give up • You have to persevere and keep going. You can do it!
effect • Noun: the final result (think of “cause and effect”) • One effect of stress is that you can get lots of headaches.
adapt • Verb: to change so that you fit in with something new • Sometimes it’s hard to adapt to a new school, but get involved and you’ll soon feel like you’re an important part of it!
tranquil • Adjective: Peaceful and calm • The lake was very tranquil, so it made for a smooth boat ride.
Soothe • Verb: to calm down or to settle down • We tried and tried to soothe the babies, but they just wouldn’t stop crying.
placid • Adjective: calm, quiet, undisturbed • The lake is so still and placid that its surface look like glass.
lull • Verb: to soothe or quiet down • My dad used to lull me to sleep by reading a story or singing a song.
