Choosing the right picture to draw • Your child should draw a picture that begins with the letter at the top of the paper. Pumpkin begins with P…
Formulating a sentence • Take the words out of the bag • Help your child formulate a simple sentence using the words from the bag. Using color words helps. • A new word will be added to this bag weekly.
Kid Writing • The child should copy the words on the line. • Use the pom pom as the ‘meatball space’ between the words • When the sentence is complete place the period at the end. • Adult Writing –the adult then writes the sentence correctly under the child’s kid writing. • Help your child to sound out words that are in the sentence that are not in the bag and encourage them to write the letters that they hear. Independent Writing • Children write their own pieces • Risk-free environment • Children know what they do is accepted and valued • Writing becomes closer to adult writing as the teacher guides the process
Kid Writing Rubric • Hot Air Balloon- Exceptional! Beyond the Standard • Most sentences are phonetically correct with vowels in correct positions • More than one phonetic sentence is present • Bunch of Balloons – Great Work!Meets the Standard, Follows Teacher’s Directions thoroughly and masters the writing task • Most words contain beginning and ending sounds • Sentences contain three or more words • Meat Ball Spaces are present • Period at the end of the sentence • Picture matches the writing • Capital is present at the beginning of the sentence • One Balloon – Almost there! • Each word is followed by appropriate spacing • A period is used at the end of the sentence
