  1. Benefits of Exercise on Cognition By Mackenzie Jackson • With age our cognitive functioning naturally slows down and decreases. This can affect things such as: • Decision making • Understanding • Learning • Remembering • Numerous studies have showed that exercise is great for you body, but exercise can also help keep your mind in-shape!! • Benefits of all types of exercise on cognition: • Both people with and without a predisposition for dementia saw a decreased cognitive decline when exercising (Kramer et al) • Exercise helps improve and stabilize cognitive functioning with exercise at least 3x a week (Middleton and colleagues) • HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) can help improve cognitive function in proportion to improvements in exercise capacity (News-Medical.Net) • Even people who are already experiencing cognitive impairments can see improvements ( Middleton et al) • What types of exercise should I do? • Walking, Stairs, Biking, and other Cardio exercises • Resistance Training • HIIT Training (Short intense workouts that combine many exercises) • Strength and balance exercises • How often should I exercise?? • At least three times a week for 30 minutes • You can break this into ten minute increments throughout the day • “High-intensity Training Boosts Cognitive Function.” High-Intensity Training Boosts Cognitive Function.
