Hegemony: Force vs. Ideology • Force = Law • Government Control: the police, the army, the legal system • Crime: I use force to keep you from engaging in the behavior. • Legislate laws that prohibit equal treatment or sanction segregation. • Ideology = Belief • Culture: schools, the church, mythology, stories, films, tv., music, advertising... • Sin or taboo: I use belief so that you "arrest yourself" from engaging in the behavior. • Encouraging you to engage in behaviors that I can arrest you for or will justify limiting your freedom.

Racism: I make you believe you should engage in the action. Encode racism in language; white vs. black Encouraging you to engage in behaviors that I can arrest you for. Encouraging you to pursue careers (sports, entertainment) that will render you politically and financially powerless. Deny Felons right to vote and encourage you to engage in felony behaviors. Make you think voting doesn’t matter.

Legally deny women access to educational institutions or ability to work outside the home. Polygamy Marginalize feminist agenda Ideology = Belief Culture: schools, the church, mythology, stories, films, tv, music advertising... Make you see yourself as a sexual commodity. Make you want to sell yourself as a sexual commodity. Create media that shows sexually attractive women being rewarded and omits or denies positive coverage of those who aren’t. Define what it means to be a “sexually attractive woman” in different terms than “sexually attractive man”. Define women’s bodies as sexual and men’s bodies as “athletic”: reward women for sex and men for power and dominance. Define “Feminism” as “radical”; women as subset of “men”.
