  1. Theme Discussions Tuesday, July 13 10:15 – 11:15

  2. IT Industry Update • IT Spokesperson, Joe Kmoch • IT Educational Consultant • Co-chair, Milwaukee Washington HS of IT AB • joe@jkmoch.com • Outline: • New industry trends, • New technologies on the horizon • Growth sector forecast & employment opportunities • Important education considerations for key positions

  3. Industry Updates New industry trends-1 • More packaged (COTS – commercial off the shelf) software and less custom development • SAP, Oracle, Salesforce.com or any other application that is now commercially available and would have been custom built in the past "buy vs build” (vertical market segment) • Integration architecture becomes a key component of enterprise systems • Enterprise information management including Data Warehouse, Business Intelligence, Content Management Systems, Master Data Management (MDM), Data Stewardship and Governance

  4. Industry Updates New industry trends-2 • Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is now mainstream and a great enabler of distributed apps • Set of independent services that are combined together in various ways to provide functionality for a particular business; for example online app to open an account, book an airline ticket which are used in other source code (eg, Java library calls where the library contains modules like those in the examples) • Business Intelligence (BI) solutions are becoming indispensible to companies of all sizes • This has to do with understanding your clients and their behavior – the key concepts are 360 degree view of customer, predictive analytics (Amazon, Walmart), "golden record",house-holding and single source of the truth.  The bottom line is growing sales and increasing profitability through the analysis of enterprise data.

  5. Industry Updates New technologies on the horizon • Cloud computing and Software as a Service (SaaS) are hot topics at the CTO/CIO level • Google, Microsoft Azure, Live • Pervasive mobile computing • iPhone and Android phones • “new wave” portables such as iPad

  10. IT Industry Update Important education considerations for key positions • college grads need to take note of all of the industry trends and futures noted earlier into account • IT is everywhere...no business can run without it, so the operations (Infrastructure) side of things will open up more and more jobs, but the training needs are lower (certification, associate degrees, Tech College, etc) and these are the "skilled trades" jobs of the future - in all areas • In computing, about 3 times the number of jobs available than there will be graduates through 2018

  11. IT Industry Update Other important education considerations for key positions • Programming is important, but • far more of a computing professional’s time is spent working with others in order to understand and resolve complex problems • So, develop communicating skills (reading, writing, speaking), problem solving skills, teamwork /collaboration skills, experience working on and completing larger projects (with little teacher involvement) • Implementing those solutions very often involves programming skills and concepts, though not necessarily in traditional languages
