Veterans’ Lessons Learned • Communication ! • - contact veteran early and regularly • ---speak distinctly, slowly, and loud to elderly veterans • -- get veteran’s phone and home address • -- get alternate phone for spouse or care giver • - interviews • -- face to face at veteran’s home • --- beware of distractions on wall, phone ringing, etc. • -- may also be by phone or e-mail due to travel or health • - explain clearly to veteran each step you take • Expectations • - very disappointing when students drop out of project • - courteous, prepared, prompt
