  4. Where is it located? • On the shore of Monterey Bay.

  6. What do I think about this mission? • Carmel not very successful as a mission. • But it was headquarters of chain for 34 years • This made it important.

  7. List any special or unique qualities the mission has. • 1.Highest record population (876) in 1795. • 2. Church designated a minor Basilica by Pope John XXIII. • 3. New stone church completed by master architect Manuel Ruiz.

  8. Was your mission ever damaged? Was it fixed? • Yes, the roof of the church collapsed, and churched remained roofless for 30 years. Yes, Fr. Angelos Casanova put a steep shingled roof on church which saved it from further destruction but marred its graceful lines.

  9. Who lived at the mission? What Indian tribe lived at this mission? • The Eslenes Indians.

  10. What was daily life like on the mission? • The Indians were trained as plowmen, shepherds, cattle herders, black smiths, and carpenters.

  11. Did the Indians like their lives at the mission? • Probably, because they were trained to do things that they might not of even known how to do before.

  12. What did the mission grow? • They planted crops of wheat and crops and vineyards, and raised cattle and sheep.
