National Perinatal Depression Initiative (1) • Election commitment of Commonwealth Government • $85 million committed (includes $30 million from States and Territories) over 5 years. • Aims to improve prevention, early detection of antenatal and postnatal depression, provide better support and treatment.
Key elements to National Perinatal Depression Initiative (1) • Routine and universal screening for perinatal depression • Follow up support and care for women assessed as being at risk of or experiencing perinatal depression • Workforce training and development for health professionals • Research and data collection • National guidelines for screening for perinatal depression • Community awareness
National Perinatal Depression Initiative (1) Funding • $7.016 million over five years from the Commonwealth Government. • Commitment to match funding from the State Government.
Work to date in VictoriaInternal Advisory Group • In August 2008 an internal advisory group was convened with relevant representatives across Government • Mental Health (chair) • Primary Health (general practitioners, community health) • Maternity Services (midwives, obstetricians) • Maternal and Child Health (maternal and child health nurses) • Early Parenting Centres (Tweddle etc)

Internal Government views – potential response to Initiative (4) • Utilise maternity services for prenatal screening • Utilise maternal and child health services for postnatal screening
Internal Government views – potential response to Initiative (4) • Training of other services to screen clients if concerned (e.g. early parenting centres, counselling, Aboriginal Health workers) • Improve communication between service providers • Improve pathways to care for women at risk of depression and other mental health issues • Consider undertaking further research to validate Victorian response.
