  2. Early Japan 300 - 900 • Disunited island civilization • Rival clans fought for power • Strong warrior culture develops • Shinto: native religion of Japan. Based on worship of nature spirits & ancestors

  3. Yamato Emperors Rule Japan • By 500, Yamato clan took over Japan = Emperor • Claimed to be descendants of the Sun Goddess • Adopted Chinese art, writing, govt. structure, & Buddhism

  4. Heian Period 800 - 1185 • Golden Age of Japanese court culture & etiquette • Centered on city of Heian (Kyoto) • Tale of Genji: 1st novel in world, by Lady Murasaki Shikibu

  5. Feudalism Erodes Imperial Authority • By 1100s, central govt. had broken down • Large landlords (Daimyo) set up private armies of warriors (Samurai) • Lived by a code of honor known as Bushido

  6. Rise of the Shogunate • By 1200, the Minamoto clan became dominant = took title of Shogun (commander of Emperor’s Army) • Shogun ruled like a dictator • Emperor became a figurhead

  7. 1200s: Samurai repel the Mongol Invasions

  8. Civil War 1467 - 1600 • Local Daimyo gained more power overtime & fought eachother • By 1600: Tokugawa Ieyasu united Japan using guns & became Shogun

  9. Tokugawa Shogunate 1600 - 1868 • Tokugawa outlawed guns & closed Japan’s ports to protect its Feudal society from foreign influence • By 1700, Japan was becoming an urban society

  10. New Arts • Haiku: short poems that express ideas through images • Kabuki: dramas with elaborate costumes, dance, & music

  11. Europeans Threaten Japanese Culture • Europeans began exporting their goods & Christianity into Japan • The Shogun & Samurai feared a loss of power so they closed Japan’s ports & abolished Christianity until 1854
