How do we deliver inductions? Who decides this format? Lecture format to large groups Staff-led activity for smaller groups Online activity The Learning Resources manager The Learning Resources team The College Senior Management team
Lecture format to large groups • On students’ first day at college – information overload! • Dull • Very short sessions • Instead – short sales pitch on induction day with links to website and follow-up sessions later on in term
Idea! • Library non-users research • Use data from library system and college admin system to prove that using the library will increase grades
Welcome to the LRC • LRC = Learning Resources Centre = Library • Where we are • Open 8.30-4.30 • Full details available on the intranet
Why use the LRC? • Never used the LRC Average grade = D/E
Why use the LRC? • Regularly used the LRC Average grade = C
Why use the LRC? • Regularly used the LRC and Online Resources Average grade = A/B
How we did it • Three sample groups: • Never used • Regularly used • Regularly used (and used online resources)
N A M E
Group 2 - Regularly used • Same procedure with usage>30 • Check grades in Corero • Input into excel
Group 3 - Regularly used (and used online resources) • More difficult – stats don’t exist of exactly who has been using the resources • Do know who has attended Info Skills workshop sessions
Impact • College Principal’s interest • Stuck in the students’ minds • Consistently busy with rising issue figures over past two years
