What Gets Put Out There…… • A recent survey commissioned by Microsoft found that 70 percent of recruiters and hiring managers in the United States have rejected an applicant based on information they found online. • What kind of information? At Florida Atlantic University….. Jonatha Carr (24 year old student) began ranting in class over evolution and turned it into a verbal and physical attack screaming about killing her classmates and smacking them. The videos her classmates recorded went viral on YouTube within hours. (March 2012)
It is Not Just Students….. Frank J. Rybicki, assistant professor of mass media at Valdosta State University, shut the laptop of a student who was allegedly web surfing as opposed to taking notes. She filed a complaint (reportedly about a finger or fingers that were hurt when he shut the laptop) and the university's police arrested him on a charge of battery. The Georgia institution suspended his teaching duties there, although not his pay. (Inside Higher Ed April 2011)
Teachers Make Mistakes Too… A Florida high school's "Teacher of the Year" has been suspended for an anti-gay post he wrote on his Facebook page last month. How About Some Positives… • Kaplan University in Fort Lauderdale uses LinkedIn to support career endeavors for its 53,000+ students & alumni. Sophie Vlessing, the university’s VP-strategic marketing and student experience, said the school has posted webinars & 80 videos from Visionary Voices, a recurring series of discussions with thought leaders. • Pace University established a Facebook question and answer interaction board where potential students discuss issues/concerns/questions with students who’ve previously attended the institution. Syracuse • When Emerson President Jacqueline Liebergott shared that she had an important announcement, two students started the hashtag #jackiessecret, discussing what the news could be.
