Introduction To Digital PhotographyII – Camera Features Fritz Schneider Peacham Cybernetics
Point and Shoot • Automatic setting • Camera makes its best guess: • Exposure • Focus • Color balance • No manual override
Exposure • Combination of how much light (Aperture) and for how long (Shutter Speed) • 1/200th at f/4 = 1/100th at f/8 = 1/50th at f/16 • + or – Exposure • Aperture priority • Shutter priority • Full manual
Metering node • Center weighted • Spot • Multi-zone • Face detection
Auto Focus • Center • Spot • Multizone • Face recognition • Manual • Macro (close-up)
Image Format • Picture is compressed to save space
Multiple Shots • Capture unpredictable motion • Bracketing exposure • High Dynamic Range • Short movie clips
Sensitivity • ASA or ISO “film speed” • Take pictures in low light • Increased noise (colored speckles)
Flash • Built-in flash can reach 10 feet or so • Fill flash is a nice effect • Plain flash gives stark shadows • Red eye prevention takes time • Early flash vs. late flash
Zoom • Expressed as 35mm equivalent: • 35mm is wide angle • 55mm is normal • 135mm is short telephoto • Old rule of thumb: handhold 200mm at 1/200th or faster, but stabilization can double that • Digital zoom is just in-camera cropping
Self-timer • Prop the camera on a level surface • You have 10 seconds to run around front and smile • Can also be used to start a time exposure.
Filters • Used to be used for color adjustment • “Skylight” or “1A” used to protect the lens if you have threads • Polarizer controls reflections and deepens sky color • Some cameras have useless built-in black and white or sepia effects
Special Presets • Scenery – locks focus at infinity • Portrait – balances for good skin tones • Night – optimizes for low light • Sports – tries for high shutter speed • Smile – Waits for smiles! • Etc…
Geo Tagging • Camera can record GPS coordinates • Separate GPS logger can also be used
Mobile Phone Camera • Smartphones have better and better cameras • Good for close-ups • Features controlled by touch screen • Practice your grip • Apps available to replace standard camera • Takes movies too
