  2. Warm-up • Name the 4 levels of educational degrees a person can receive. • What do you think of when you hear the term “Health Care Professional?”

  3. Agenda • Objective(s): The student will be able to describe and explain the various routes of education in order to pursue a career in the health care field. The student will also be able to differentiate between the 5 pathways. • Lesson: Careers in Health Care • Reminder: Quiz 3, Monday, March 3rd

  4. Introduction to Health Careers • Education • High school preparation • Health science technology education (HSTE) • Principles of Health Science, Medical Terminology, Health Science, Pharmacology • HOSA/ Other extracurricular activities • Post-secondary education • Types of degrees

  5. Post Secondary Education • Associate’s Degree • From a community college or vocation/technical school • 2 year course of study

  6. Post Secondary Education • Bachelor’s Degree • From a college or university • Course of study is 4 or more years

  7. Post Secondary Education • Master’s Degree • Course of study 1or more years beyond a bachelor’s degree • Doctorate • Course of study 2 or more years beyond a bachelor’s or master’s degree (sometimes even 4-6 years)

  8. Certification, Registration, and Licensure • Purpose • To ensure skill and competency of health care workers and to protect patients

  9. Certification • Certification is issued if person fulfills requirements of education and performance and meets standards and qualifications established • Not required to work in that career field • Examples: Certified Pediatric Nurse, Certified Dental Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant

  10. Licensure • Authorizes individuals to work in an occupation • Usually require a person to: • Complete an approved educational program • Pass a state board test • Maintain certain standard to obtain and retain licensure • Examples: physicians, dentists, physical therapists, registered nurses

  11. Registration • Required in some health careers • Professional/state agencies administer examinations and maintain a current list (the “registry”) of qualified individuals • Examples: registered dietitian, registered nurse

  12. Accrediting Agencies • Purpose • Ensures that program of study meets established quality competency standards

  13. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) • Purpose • Required to renew licenses, maintain certification, or registration • Ex: Registered Nurses must have 20 CEU hours every 2 years

  14. Training Levels • Aide or assistant • Up to one year of training (classroom and on-the-job training) • Ex: dental, medical, or nursing assistants • Technician • Associate’s degree, or on-the-job training • Ex: dental laboratory technician, surgical technician

  15. Training Levels • Technologist or Therapist • 3-4 years of college (bachelor’s), plus work experience • Ex: Occupational Therapist, Respiratory Therapist • Professional • 4 years of college (bachelor’s), and an advanced degree (usually) • Ex: dentist, physician, nurse

  16. National Health Care Skill Standards (NHCSS) • Purpose • Developed to indicate knowledge and skills expected of health care workers in a specific cluster • Health Care Clusters • Therapeutic Services • Diagnostic Services • Health Informatics Services • Support Services • Biotechnology Research and Development (continues)

  17. THERAPEUTIC SERVICES Maintain or change the health status of the patient over time SAMPLE CAREERS: • Nursing • Physician • Allied Health • PT, OT, ST • Dietitian • Ensures patients have food available that is tailored to their specific diet

DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES Create a picture of patient health at a single point of time SAMPLE CAREERS: • Electroencephalographic Technologist • Person who takes pictures of the brain • Medical Laboratory Technologist • Person who performs laboratory tests on body specimens • Radiologic Technologist • Person who performs X-Rays

HEALTH INFORMATICS Provide functions that support and document patient care SAMPLE CAREERS: • Admitting Clerk • Takes patient information for hospital admission • Epidemiologist • Takes information to monitor disease outbreak • Medical Librarian • Provides educational resources to health care professionals

  20. SUPPORT SERVICES Provide a therapeutic environment for the delivery of health care SAMPLE CAREERS: • Central Supply Worker • Manages cleans/supplies for the health care facility • Housekeeping • Provides a clean hospital environment

BIOTECHNOLOGY RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT Use scientific and technical advancements to enhance diagnostic and therapeutic abilities in health care SAMPLE CAREERS: • Biomedical Engineer • Creates new machines for the delivery of health care (heart/lung machine, dialysis machine, etc) • Forensic Scientist • Develops new techniques for the examination of bodily evidence involved in a crime

Individual Activity • Career Profile (www.texashotjobs.org) • Choose a career from the Texas HOT Jobs book. • Once you have chosen a career, write it on the white board so no one else can pick that career. • Ex: Mrs. McCoy- Dental Assistant • In your Speaking Bubble Sheet, include the • Career • BASIC job duties • Education required & Certs/Licensure/Registration (if applicable) • Salary • You may use your Smartphone to look up pictures of your career to help you color in your worksheet
