Welcome to ILT 1! Course Outline Sessions 3 - 5
Contextual factors in LT - 1 • The importance of context • Two main aspects: • the teaching-learning situation • the learner • Stern’s “contextual factors” model: • types • variables
Types of context • Language teaching • School environment • Home environment and neighbourhood • Region • National and international setting
Context variables • Linguistic • Socio-cultural • Historical/political • Geographic • Economic/technological • Educational
Linguistic • FL:mother tongue (MT): • similarity/difference -> ease/difficulty of learning • Homogenous/heterogenous: • > ease/difficulty of teaching
Socio-cultural • Attitudes to FL: • e.g., post “Iron Curtain” • Socio-economic status: • higher vs lower • Views of language and learning: • prestige of BE • repetition, memorisation, etc
Historical/political • Language status: • effect of English as an International Language (EIL) on FL learning in UK, vs. learning of EFL in e.g., Denmark, the Netherlands, etc • Political climate: • “Open Door” policy -> internationalisation
Geographic • Proximity to where FL spoken • MT or second language (SL) situations (i.e., where target language present outside classroom) vs. FL situation (target language not present outside classroom)
Economic/technological • Economic and scientific development: • > demand for EFL • Teaching/learning resources: • from blackboard to electronic whiteboard
Educational • Starting age: the younger the better? • No. of hours (“drip-feed” vs intensive) • Goals • e.g., grammar/exam-oriented, or communicative, or both • Roles of teachers • “sage on the stage” vs. “guide by the side” • Institutions • BANA vs TESEP
Workshop BANA vs TESEP methodology - see handout
