  2. Like denominators2/9 + 4/9 • 2 /9 + 4/9 = 2+4/ 9 Keep the denominators the same. Add the numerators. • 6/9 = 6÷3/9÷3 = 2/3 Simplify.

  3. Different Denominators • 4/5 + 2/3 • Find a common denominator 15 • 4/5= 12/15 Get the equivalent fractions • 2/3 = 10/15 • 12/15 + 10/15 = 22/15 • 22/15 = 1 7/15

  4. You try it. • Add 3/5 + 1/5 • 7/8 + 3/8 • 1/3 + 1/8 • ¾ + 1/6 • 4/5 + 1/3

  5. Subtract fractions • 2/5 – 1/5 = 1/5 Keep the denominator. Subtract the numerator. • ¾ - 1/3 Get a common denominator 12 • Get the equivalent fraction. • ¾ = 9/12, 1/3 = 4/12 • 9/12- 4/12 = 5/12
