Encapsulation Methods for Transport of Fibre Channel Over MPLS

This document provides an overview of fibre channel transport over MAN and WAN to extend SAN applications. It discusses the demands for fibre channel services over PSN for shared infrastructure and the simplicity and transparency requirements for carrier deployment. It also explains the FC over PW network reference model and the FC over PW provider edge reference model. The document outlines the FC over PW encapsulation guidelines and the encapsulation over MPLS/PW. Finally, it highlights the requirements for FC over MPLS as a new encapsulation method.

  2. Overview • Fibre Channel transport over MAN and WAN to extend SAN applications such as disaster recovery and business continuity. • Market demands Fibre Channel services over PSN to allow shared infrastructure. • PWE3 offers a service agnostics, Layer 2 transport for various protocols. • Simplicity and transparency are key requirements for deployment of FC services from the carrier perspective. • Reuse the exiting building blocks as defined by the PWE WG to support FC service.

  3. FC over PW – PWE3 network reference model • Attachment circuit includes Native Fibre Channel ports • N_Port – end-node (disk, server) • F_Port – fabric-switch (connected to N_Port) • E_Port – fabric extension (between switches)

  4. FC over PW – PWE3 Provider Edge reference model • Native service processing (NSP) for Fibre Channel is handled by T.11

  5. FC over PW - Protocol levels and layers To/From FC Ports FC-0 FC Interface FC-1 FC-BB NSP Layers PW PSN Layers PSN Transport Interface Physical layer To/From PSN Network

  6. FC Over PW – Encapsulation Guideline • FC dataframe is carried transparently in one PW PDU. • NSP control frame (WAN flow control, Echo) is carried transparently in one PW PDU.

  7. FC Over PW – Encapsulation Guideline • FC Primitive Sequences (control signals) are terminated at the local FC-BB NSP and sent as single control frame. • FC Primitive Signals (Idle, R_RDY credits) are terminated at the local FC-BB NSP.

  8. FC over PW – Encapsulation over MPLS/PW • Frame Encapsulation • MPLS PSN label • PW label • Optional control word • FC-BB-Header (Data/control indication, FC specific) • FC frame

  9. FC over MPLS – PWE3 requirements • Define new encapsulation method for Fibre channel over PW • Assign new PW Type “Fibre Channel port mode” • Add FC to the PW types in PWE3 Charter • Maintain the PWE control word as in “draft-ietf-pwe3-cw-05.txt” • Adopt a new PWE3 working item
