  1. Transition Plan for Removing Wind Phase 1 Generic Models WECC SRWG Meeting July 2014 Eric Bakie

  2. Proposed WECC REMTFRenewable Energy Model Implementation Plan

  3. Agenda • Review Wind and Solar Records in Current WECC MDF • Review MDF Parsing Spreadsheet Tool • MDF Review Results • Review Proposed Implementation Timeline for Phase 2 REMTF Wind and Solar Models • Group Discussion

  4. Wind and Solar DynamicModel Records in WECC MDF • Approved Models • Un-Approved Models

  5. Est. Total MDF Records forTransition to REMTF Phase 2 Wind / Solar Models

  6. motor1 Model Conversion Progress (12 mo.) Model Conversion of Type 1 Wind using motor1 from SRWG RepLog • Conversion to Phase 2 estimate is 526 records

  7. MDF Review Observations • Large blocks of units represented using synchronous generator models (i.e. genrou(tpj), exst1, ggov1, etc.) • Dynamics Data records do not match Powerflow Turbine Type • Turbine Type 21 – Type 1 Wind Turbine • MDF Comment = Type 4 Plant • Model Records = Type 3 Models • Large blocks represented without dynamic control models • gewtg or genrou – model only • Large blocks represented without full collector system equivalent

  8. Implementation Plan Goal • Update existing WECC wind/solar dynamic records with REMTF Phase 2 Wind and Solar Models • Typos in Table 1 / 1A: • wt1p(2p) => wt1p_b • VRGTPA => VTGTPAT • FRQTPA => FRQTPAT

  9. Notes on wt1p and wt2p • REMTF recommended removing wt1p and wt2p models from the WECC Approved Model List • No pitch controller for passive stall turbines • wt1p_b should be used for active stall turbines • REMTF will take action to inspect MDF • Make recommendation of either deleting wt1p and wt2p records or replacing records with wt1p_b models

  10. 2014 SRWG Base Case Compilation Schedule Data Request to Start Transition

  11. 2015 SRWG Base Case Compilation Schedule Phase 2 Target Completion Date Remove Phase 1 Models Add un-converted models to PPMDTF list PPMDTF review target completion date

  12. Proposed Implementation Timeline • MVWG Renewables Workshop 6/17/2014 • Initial WECC Data Request 7/18/2014 • Target Completion Date 6/05/2015 • Remove Ph. 1 Models from Approved List 6/05/2015 • Begin PPMDTF Review 7/10/2015 • Target Completion of PPMDTF Review 12/18/2015

  13. Relevant Timeline for NERC Modeling Data Verification Standards • MOD-026-1 • R1, R3, R4, R5, R6 07/1/2014 • R2 (30%) 07/1/2018 • R2 (50%) 07/1/2020 • R2 (100%) 07/1/2024 • MOD-027-1 • R1, R3, R4, R5 07/1/2014 • R2 (30%) 07/1/2018 • R2 (50%) 07/1/2020 • R2 (100%) 07/1/2024

  14. Relevant Timeline for NERC Modeling Data Reporting Standards • MOD-032-1 • R1 07/1/2015 • R2 07/1/2016

  15. SRWG Discussion • Is the proposed implementation plan reasonable? • SRWG Member Recommendations

  16. Next Steps • Add SRWG Member Comments • Publish Phase 2 Implementation Plan • Post to SRWG Site • Develop Tool for Tracking Progress • Stand Alone or Replog • Encourage data submitters to improve steady-state and dynamic data representation of wind and solar plants in WECC Basecases • Encourage use of WECC Wind and Solar Modeling Guidelines • Develop Tool for checking Powerflow Turbine Type Data against dynamics data modeling records
