  1. Metric Conversions • Liter-- measures VOLUME or Capacity (think SODA) • Meter-- measures LENGTH or DISTANCE (think meter stick.) • Gram-- measures MASS or WEIGHT The basic units of the Metric System

  2. Metric Conversions BIGGER: (more than one unit) The prefixes

  3. Metric Conversions SMALLER: (less than one unit) The prefixes

  4. Metric Conversions Examples: Units of length

  5. Metric Conversions One way to do the conversions is by using a conversion factor. Make the conversion factor by writing a NUMERATOR that is the unit you are going TO and a DENOMINATOR that is the unit your are coming FROM.

  6. Metric Conversions Make the conversion factor by writing a NUMERATOR that is the unit you are going TO and a DENOMINATOR that is the unit your are coming FROM. Ex: Convert 325 cm to meters: Conversion factor: METERS CENTIMETERS

  7. 1 m 100 cm Metric Conversions Use the equivalence to insert numbers to complete the conversion factor. 1m = 100cm Conversion factor:

  8. 1 m 325 m 100 100 cm Metric Conversions Ex: Convert 325 cm to meters: 325 cm * = = 3.25m

  9. Metric Conversions Or, you can remember that King Henry Died Ultimately Drinking Chocolate Milk.

  10. Metric Conversions Remembering common prefixes

  11. Metric Conversions Example: How many meters are in 1.75 km? Converting Metric Units

  12. Metric Conversions Step 1: Turn the table sideways Example: How many meters are in 1.75 km?

  13. Metric Conversions Step 1: Turn the table sideways Example: How many meters are in 1.75 km?

  14. Metric Conversions Step 2: Round the question DOWN to the last whole unit. Enter that number into the table. Example: How many meters are in 1.75 km? • 1 1.75 km would round DOWN to 1 km.

  15. Metric Conversions Step 3: Write the rest of the number. Ignore the decimal point! Example: How many meters are in 1.75 km? Step 4: Fill in zeroes in all of the other boxes. • 1 7 5 0 0 0 0

  16. Metric Conversions Step 5: Find the “target” units. In this case, you need METERS, so you need to put the decimal point AFTER the units place. Example: How many meters are in 1.75 km? • 1 7 5 0 0 0 0

  17. Metric Conversions Answer the question: 1.75 km = 1750 m. Example: How many meters are in 1.75 km? • 1 7 5 0 0 0 0

  18. Metric Conversions Repeat those steps, except the decimal point moves to the place AFTER centimeters. Suppose the next question asked you to convert 1.75 km into centimeters… • 1 7 5 0 0 0 0

  19. Metric Conversions Answer: 1.75 km = 175,000 cm Suppose the next question asked you to convert 1.75 km into centimeters… • 1 7 5 0 0 0 0

  20. Metric Conversions Step 1: Turn the table sideways Example: How many meters are in 4235 cm?

  21. Example: How many meters are in 4235 cm? Metric Conversions Step 2: Enter that number into the table. Be sure that the “ones” digit ends up in the proper column. • 4 2 3 5

  22. Example: How many meters are in 4235 cm? Metric Conversions Step 3: Ignore the decimal point! Step 4: Fill in zeroes in all of the other boxes. • 0 0 4 2 3 5 0

  23. Metric Conversions Step 5: Find the “target” units. In this case, you need METERS, so you need to put the decimal point AFTER the units place. Example: How many meters are in 4235 cm? • 0 0 4 2 3 5 0

  24. Example: How many meters are in 4235 cm? Metric Conversions Answer the question: 4235 cm = 42.35 m • 1 7 5 0 0 0 0

  25. Metric Conversions Frequently Asked Questions Does this work for volume and mass, too? What if I don’t have graph paper? Does this work for feet and inches?

  26. Metric Conversions Frequently Asked Questions Does this work for volume and mass, too? What if I don’t have graph paper? 3. Does this work for feet and inches? Yes. This works for ALL metric units! You CAN use regular lined paper…just turn it sideways. NO! This only works for metric units.

  27. Metric Conversions Practice Copy the grid onto your paper.

  28. Try These Metric Conversions 42,382m = _______ km 650 m = _________ km 2752 g = __________kg 37 mm = __________m 37 mm = __________cm

  29. Solutions Metric Conversions

  30. Solutions Metric Conversions 42.382 0.650 2.752 0.037 3.7

  31. Answers Metric Conversions 42,382m = 42.382 km 650 m = 0.650 km 2752 g = 2.752 kg 37 mm = 0.037 m 37 mm = 3.7 cm
