Some Historical Background
Duplication and ‘Homogenization’ At the origin of OhioLINK’s pursuit of a ‘consortial approval vendor’ were notions of Duplication and ‘Homogenization.’ In 1997, Tom Sanville found that while duplicate holdings of 5 or more copies of individual titles was increasing, the number of unfilled [PCIRC] requests was growing.
Duplication and the “homogenizing” effects of Approval Plans: TLRN • The percentage of titles held by only one library, 50% following approval plan shipments • Fell to 11% after firm and slip orders. Titles held by all three TRLN libraries, 14% due to approval plan shipments, rose to 64%. • Most dramatic in F History, where approval plan shipments placed NO titles in all three libraries. • Yet all three libraries acquired 72% of the titles in F, while in the end only 10% were held by just one TRLN library. • The relative uniqueness resulting from approval plan shipments was largely erased by discretionary purchases.

Enough History – Let’s Cut to the Chase -
The Complexity and the Challenge • Number of participating institutions (over 80 ) • Multiplied by number collection managers • Divided by geographical boundaries of a large state Then take these active and geographically distributed participants and….. • Create a system by which they can each interact with some portion of the number of new books profiled by YBP and Lindsay & Howes each year (>60,000 in 2002-2003) • And arrive at decisions that benefit both their individual libraries and OhioLINK collectively……
A ‘Not-bought’ Outline • List of YBP profiled titles NOT bought by any OhioLINK library retrieved via GOBI • Titles collected monthly in folder in GOBI • Participating libraries purchase ‘Not-bought’ titles from this folder • Both ‘Local History’ and ‘GobiTween’ Consortial History recorded in GOBI • GOBI management reports for monitoring and analysis
