When was the Opera House built? • Planning for the Sydney Opera House began in the late 1940s • A design competition was launched on 13 September 1955 • The winner, announced in 1957, was JørnUtzon, a Danish architect. • Construction of the opera house began in March 1959. The project was built in three stages. • Difficulties, changes on the original plans, and political issues made JornUtzorn leave the project in 1966. • Sydney Opera House was opened by her majesty Queen Elizabeth II on October 1973. JornUtzorn, the designer of the out-standing building, was not invited to the ceremony.
