What is problem behavior?In a general way We talk about problem behavior when the behaviour of one person or a group personsdisturb an activity, and the behavior is difficult to change But there is more… www.blankers-hage.nl

Individual differences • Intellect • Speaking • Level of being active (passive of active) • Personality and temperament • Age • Fluctuation of autism www.blankers-hage.nl
Courses of problem behaviour • Fear • Physical pain • Overestimating (of themselves) • Unexpected changes • Boredom • Threatening • Hypersensitive (hearing/feeling) www.blankers-hage.nl
Visible behaviour • Compulsive • Aggression -To other ones -To themselves (automutilation) • Doing the same thing (stereotype) • Withdrawn (aloof) www.blankers-hage.nl
Non visual behaviour • Don’t understand the surrounding/environment • Problems with communication • Problems with social contacts www.blankers-hage.nl
Why? • Contact and communication problems • Fears because of changes in the surrounding • Context blindness www.blankers-hage.nl
Problem behaviour is used for: • Making something clear (communication) • Showing the feelings of -fear -Angriness -Panic • Showing the feelings of autism www.blankers-hage.nl
Autistic clients have problems with sense information Making combinations is difficult, and sometimes they make wrong combinations Context blindness www.blankers-hage.nl
Specific and non specific problem behaviour • Specific: (in the autist) Direct related to autism for example: Resistance of changes and close themselves for stimuli • Non specific (surrounding) not direct related to autism but related to how an autistic is standing in life. www.blankers-hage.nl
Attitude guider/parent • Consequent • Prepare (pro-active) • Prevent problem behavior: use simple languish • Don’t think its manipulative behavior • Don’t go to far into the situation (carry away) • Be creative in the structure! www.blankers-hage.nl
Treatment • Look to the surrounding: is there structure, good communication? • Is there specific problem behavior? • Obsessive compulsive behavior: -Rules -Alternatives -Use as a reward -give them borders www.blankers-hage.nl
Structure • Stimuli reduction (protection of stimuli) • Stimuli selection (witch stimuli you give and witch not) • Stimuli regulation (making the stimuli predictable: a drill makes a lot of noise) • Stimuli intensity (bigger photo’s, visualization) • Stimuli expand (to learn new things in a right way) www.blankers-hage.nl
