  1. Why Teach English as a Second Language?

  2. Why Teach English as a Second Language? • Luke 10:2-3 • “He told them, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.’”

  3. Why Teach English as a Second Language? • One of the most strategic tools for sharing Christ with ethnolinguistic people groups is English as a Second Language (ESL). • Texas has become an international mission field as people groups from all over the world have moved to its urban centers in pursuit of the American dream. • These people groups are living in communities around Southern Baptists of Texas Convention churches. • They know that in order to survive in Texas, they will need to learn English. You can help them.

  4. Why Teach English as a Second Language? • First, consider the location of your church and the demographics of the communities around the church. • Begin to explore these demographics by asking survey questions of people group spiritual leaders, community leaders, business owners, etc. • They will be able to help you assess the need for ESL in their community. • It is important to begin by asking questions about who the people group members are such as:

  5. Why Teach English as a Second Language? • Where are you from? • Who is in your family? • Who are your friends? • Where do you live? • What language do you speak? • What language does your family and/or friends speak with one another? • How many people speak this language in this area? • How did you come to live in Texas?

  6. Why Teach English as a Second Language? • Next you will want to ask them questions about what their lives are like such as: • What do you do? • Where do you work? • Where do you shop? • Where do you eat? • Where do you go after work? • What do you do for fun?

  7. Why Teach English as a Second Language? • Then you will want to transition to questions about what they believe: • What do you believe? • Where do you practice your beliefs? • What festivals do you celebrate? • What do they mean?

  8. Why Teach English as a Second Language? • Finally, ask them about their needs: • What needs do you have? • What do you think about the churches in your community? • Is there a need for someone to teach English to the people from your country or in your community living here? • These questions will help you begin to understand how ESL can be used as a ministry to internationals living around your church.

  9. Why Teach English as a Second Language? • Next, discover the different ESL programs offered in your area. • Look for new and creative ways to use ESL for sharing Christ with members of the people groups in your community. • Set aside time to interview other ESL program directors and teachers in these ministries in order to find out why and how they are using ESL. • ESL ministries are often very eager to share their successes and failures with those interested in starting another ESL ministry.

  10. Why Teach English as a Second Language? • They will usually invite you to attend their classes so that you can learn what they are doing and perhaps meet a need that they are not able to meet. • Then, define your strategy for developing an ESL ministry. • Ask yourself some assessment questions and combine these with the answers to your demographic questions as you define the strategy. • What do you want to accomplish through an ESL ministry? • How can you use ESL to evangelize your students?

  11. Why Teach English as a Second Language? • How can you use ESL as a platform to gain access into places you would normally not be able to access much less through a position of authority? • Consider these online resources as you develop your strategy www.namb.net/ESL, www.eslsite.com, www.esl.net/esl_resources.html, www.englishavenue.com, and www.englishclub.com. • It is essential that you pray about your ESL strategy. • God will help you meet the needs of the people groups in your community so that His truth is known among them.

  12. Why Teach English as a Second Language? • Finally, it is important that you become a certified ESL instructor. • This will help legitimize your ministry to the people groups in your community. • You can become a North American Mission Board certified ESL instructor by attending a certification class at the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention office July 22 at 9 AM until July 23, 2011 at 5 PM. • We can help you develop an ESL ministry in your community if you register herewww.sbtexas.com/ESL for this certification class.

  13. Why Teach English as a Second Language? • This certification class will help you learn how to use ESL as a tool for sharing Christ. • You will be given multiple resources for developing your ESL ministry. • You will have an opportunity to network and learn from other Christians interested in using ESL as a ministry to reach the people groups in their community. • You have the unique opportunity to serve as a literacy missionary to these people groups without ever leaving your city, county or state. • Will you choose to serve them?
