Brent Schillage No Easy Answers
Brent Schillage received graduate degrees in law and business from Tulane University, both of them in 2000. Since that time, he has owned and operated a number of businesses, including the Fort Lauderdale, Florida-based Schillage Law Group, and NexGenBiolabs, Inc., in Tampa.
“I am a big animal rights advocate,” he says. “I donate time at dog shelters and absolutely love dogs.” There was a time, not so long ago, that the idea of animals having any rights at all was far-fetched.
But for more and more people, it’s an idea that is coming into its own. For many animal rights advocates, though certainly not all, the question of animal rights is one that sets limits on human behavior. Animals as a group are vulnerable, and at the mercy of human beings. For many people who identify as animal rights advocates, it’s an ethical matter. Why is it that we keep some animals as pets, and raise and slaughter others as food? And why are we allowed to hunt and kill some animals, but others are protected from such treatment?
There are no easy answers. But Brent Schillage knows that we can forge special bonds with animals. He regards Ty, the rescue dog he adopted and nursed back to health, as his best friend.
