His sons married • Moabite women—Ruth and Orphah. • After ten years, the sons also died. • Naomi decided to return to Bethlehem.
Ruth, A Summary • When her daughters-in-law decide to • return to Judah with her, Naomi told • them to stay in Moab where they had a • better chance of remarrying. • Both women wanted to go with Naomi. • Orphah heeded her advice and remained • in Moab, but Ruth returned to Bethlehem • with her mother-in-law.

The Book of Ruth • Best Known Verse- 1:16b-17 • “Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God will be my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me.”
Three Main Characters • Naomi -- means pleasant; changed her • name to Mara, which means bitter • She begins the book empty and hope- • less and ends the book renewed and • with a new son • Ruth -- suggests friendship • A young Moabite widow; by faith, leaves • her country, people and gods to follow • Naomi and her God. She is listed in • Jesus’ genealogy (Mt 1:5)
Three Main Characters • Boaz – probably means in him is • Strength; an old, wealthy relative of • Naomi.
Ruth 2:11-18 • 11 Boaz replied to her, "All that you • have done for your mother-in-law after • the death of your husband has been • fully reported to me, and how you left • your father and your mother and the • land of your birth, and came to a • people that you did not previously • know. 12 May the Lord reward your work, • and your wages be full from the Lord, the • God of Israel, under whose wings you have • come to seek refuge."
Ruth 2:11-18 • 13 Then she said, “I have found favor • in your sight, my lord, for you have • comforted me and indeed have • spoken kindly to your maidservant, • though I am not like one of your • maidservants." 14 At mealtime Boaz • said to her, “Come here, that you may • eat of the bread and dip your piece of • bread in the vinegar."
