9.5- War at Home • World War II put an end to the Great Depression. • The war led to the creation of almost 19 million new jobs and doubled the income of many American families.
Women and Minorities Gain Ground • Women were hired by factories to do jobs that were traditionally considered men's’ work. • 2.5 million women entered the workforce. • Factories still resisted to hire African Americans. • June 25, 1941- Roosevelt declared that there could be no discrimination in the employment of workers in defense industries or government
Nation on the Move • Roughly 15 million moved west and north during the war for jobs. • African Americans resumed the Great Migration- leaving the South to head to northern cities
Daily Life in America • Rationing occurred as the demand for raw materials and supplies increased and created shortages. • Each month a book of ration coupons was given to each household for processed foods and meats • Victory gardens were planted to produce more food for the war effort. • American bought bonds to help the government pay for the war
Japanese Internment • February 19, 1942- President Roosevelt signed an order allowing the War Department to declare any part of the US a military zone and remove anyone from that zone. • The West Coast was declared a military zone and all people of Japanese ancestry were sent to internment camps.
Japanese internment • Japanese were discriminated against during the war. • They were forced to leave their homes quickly without much preparation. • Their homes and businesses were often vandalized or destroyed when they returned home.
