ORIENTATIONLEARNING OBJECTIVES • Familiarity with mission, history and organization of the SOM/JHS • Knowledge of the training programs offered through Undergraduate and Graduate Medical Education Programs • Understanding of the types of research available • Familiarity with the financial structure of the SOM/HSF
LEARNING OBJECTIVES • Understand resources for faculty including Office of Faculty Development; Medical Student Services; Faculty Council (Promotion Committee); Faculty Senate; Library • Familiarity with policies and procedures for professional advancement • Meet other new faculty members
MISSIONUABSOM The School of Medicine is dedicated to the education of physicians and scientists in all of the disciplines of medicine and biomedical investigation for careers in practice, teaching and research. Necessary to this educational mission is the provision of outstanding medical care and services and the enhancement of new knowledge through clinical and basic biomedical research.
HISTORY OF MEDICAL EDUCATION IN ALABAMA • 1859 – Medical College of Alabama opens in Mobile • 1894 – Birmingham Medical College organizes • 1915 – Birmingham Medical College is terminated • 1920 – Medical College of Alabama moves to Tuscaloosa
HISTORY OF MEDICAL EDUCATION IN ALABAMA • 1936 – Birmingham extension center of UA opens • 1945 – Four year Medical College of Alabama created in Birmingham • 1969 – University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB) becomes one of the new 3 campus UA programs (Birmingham, Huntsville, Tuscaloosa)
HISTORY OF MEDICAL EDUCATION IN ALABAMA • 1980 – University of Alabama System recognizes one medical school, the University of Alabama School of Medicine, located in Birmingham with programs at the Huntsville and Tuscaloosa campuses • 1995 – 50th Anniversary of the Academic Health Center • 1996 – UAB Health System established
